Salt formula

Salt is crystalline sodium chloride, NaCl, with small amounts of impurities. Pure sodium chloride contains approximately 60.66% chlorine and 39.34% sodium by mass.

The sodium chloride content varies with the salt grade. The grades described here range from 97.0% for second-grade salt to 99.7% for extra-grade salt.

To calculate the sodium content, multiply the percentage of sodium chloride by approximately 0.393.

NaCl content (%) × 0.393 ≈ sodium content (%)
100% NaCl ≈ 39.34% sodium
