Description
Although Epsom salt resembles ordinary table salt, it is a different substance. Epsom salt, or magnesium sulphate heptahydrate (MgSO₄·7H₂O), consists of colourless crystals with an orthorhombic lattice (a = 1.187 nm, b = 1.200 nm, c = 0.688 nm, z = 4). Its density is 1.68 g/cm³ and its Mohs hardness is 2–2.5. It dissolves readily in water.
Other names include English salt, bitter salt and magnesia. It is also called bitter salt because of its slightly bitter taste. It is odourless and has a skin-neutral pH.
Epsom salt is the chemical compound magnesium sulphate and consists of magnesium, sulphur, water and oxygen.
