Salt granules for water softening REGESAL

REGESAL granulated water-softening salt, produced by the German company K+S, is pure white vacuum salt in granules, free from harmful impurities, insoluble matter and microbiological contamination. It is characterised by a high NaCl content of 99.7%. Even dissolution without sediment or residue allows water-treatment systems to operate optimally and extends the service life of the system, ion-exchange resin and equipment.

Hard water contains excessive calcium and magnesium. It forms deposits known as scale, which can reduce the life and efficiency of plumbing equipment. It also reduces detergent efficiency. Users may notice unpleasant deposits on sinks and dishes, or find their hair becomes dull and lifeless.

Water can be softened. Conventional softening systems, known as ion exchangers, remove unwanted calcium and magnesium ions through ion exchange. An ion exchanger contains one or more tanks filled with millions of small synthetic-resin beads. Initially, these beads carry sodium ions loosely bound to the resin. As water passes through, calcium and magnesium ions are strongly attracted to the resin and displace the sodium ions, which replace them in the water.

Over time, the sodium in the resin beads is depleted. The beads must therefore be regenerated periodically by replenishing sodium ions and removing accumulated calcium and magnesium. This is done by passing concentrated sodium chloride solution through the beads. The required brine is prepared automatically in a separate tank, where sodium chloride granules gradually dissolve.
