Feed rock salt (coarse)
Feed rock salt supplies minerals to cattle, poultry and fur-bearing animals and is used in complete and concentrated compound feeds and protein-vitamin supplements.
K+S high-quality natural rock salt is used and recommended as feed-grade sodium chloride (NaCl) for animal feed. Its sodium chloride content is at least 99%.
Available particle-size grades allow the salt to be added to feed for all animals and birds:
0.7–0.16 mm; 2.3–0.4 mm; 3.5–1.5 mm
1.4–0.16 mm; 2.3–0.8 mm
1.4–0.4 mm; 3.2–0.4 mm
2.3–0.2 mm; 3.2–0.8 mm
K+S rock salt can be produced with or without anti-caking additive E535. K+S feed salt is suitable for organic farming under EU Regulations 834/2007 and 889/2008. It is a mineral supplement that enriches animal diets with sodium and chloride.
Salt is necessary for high milk yields, good reproduction and proper bone and coat development, and should be included in every animal’s diet. It stimulates digestion and improves nutrient absorption from feed. It helps maintain normal osmotic pressure in blood and lymph and regulates pH and water-salt balance.
Chloride is needed to form hydrochloric acid in the animal’s stomach. This promotes protein swelling, makes proteins more accessible to digestive enzymes, helps dissolve minerals that are otherwise poorly soluble, such as calcium phosphates and complex iron compounds, and has a sterilising effect on foreign microflora.
Sodium maintains cellular osmotic pressure, regulates water balance and plays an important role in nerve-impulse transmission and muscle-fibre contraction.
Magnesium is important for muscle function and bone formation and activates enzymes involved in energy metabolism.
Calcium participates in nerve-impulse transmission and is essential for bone formation. It is also important during lactation and is a valuable mineral in milk.
Copper is a building block of many proteins and enzymes and participates in numerous metabolic processes.
Zinc is involved in protein, carbohydrate and fat metabolism, stabilises cell membranes and forms part of the hormone insulin.
Salt deficiency reduces appetite, which lowers daily weight gains during fattening, milk yield and milk quality, and weakens immunity. Important properties of feed salt include long storage life, very low hygroscopicity and good flowability.
Feed rock salt is used as a mineral supplement for cattle, poultry and fur-bearing animals, and as a formulation component in complete and concentrated compound feeds and protein-vitamin supplements.
