Himalayan pink salt is rock salt of marine origin, formed more than 250 million years ago. It has a distinctive taste and is available in several grain sizes.
Himalayan pink salt is rock salt of marine origin, formed more than 250 million years ago during the Permian catastrophe, which caused the ancient ocean to evaporate. During the Mesozoic era, geological changes in the Earth’s crust formed the continents. India was once a separate continent that moved slowly towards Eurasia until they joined, closing the Tethys, the ancient ocean.
In the Triassic period, 248–213 million years ago, the supercontinent Pangaea began to split into Gondwana and Laurasia, separated by the long Tethys Ocean.
The Himalayas formed where they met. Salt from the ocean that had separated the continents was pushed onto a plateau 3,000 metres high. Continuing volcanic processes melted the salt, mixing it with magma and giving it its pink colour and distinctive composition.
Himalayan pink salt tastes markedly different from other salts. Its aroma and flavour complement raw and cooked foods.
The salt is mined manually in the Himalayas without explosives, following ancient traditions, and is free from foreign impurities. Himalayan pink salt contains 84 elements and 200 chemical compounds.

Himalayan pink salt is widely used in cooking instead of table salt, including for decorating dishes. Salt slabs are also used for serving and cooking food. Fish and meat can be kept on the slabs for a period of time, after which the slabs are slowly heated to around 200 °C and used as a conventional cooking surface.
Himalayan pink salt is also used for therapeutic baths. Slabs are widely used as decorative elements in sauna construction.
