Why a dishwasher needs salt
Salt helps soften hard water, prevent scale and limescale on the machine’s internal parts, and avoid streaks on dishes. It performs this function indirectly: the dishwasher’s ion exchanger softens the water.
The ion exchanger is a tank containing resin granules that remove magnesium and calcium ions from the hard water flowing through it. The resin has a negative charge, while magnesium and calcium ions have a positive charge. As water passes through the granules, these ions are attracted to and retained on the resin surface. This process is called ion exchange and works while sodium ions remain in the resin.
Salt replenishes the sodium ions and regenerates the resin’s ability to capture calcium and magnesium. Brine enters the ion exchanger, regenerates the resin, and restores effective water softening. A dishwasher normally feeds brine into its water softener automatically after a certain volume of water has passed through the ion exchanger.
To prevent scale and ensure optimal performance of dishwasher detergent, whether powder, tablet or gel, the water must be soft, with low levels of magnesium and calcium. Compounds of these elements cause limescale and reduce detergent efficiency. Salt effectively softens the water, improves dishwasher operation and detergent action, and removes white deposits and streaks from dishes.
Customers value K+S dishwasher salt for its properties and ease of use.
