It is one of the few minerals people use as food and one of the oldest seasonings. Since ancient times, salt has been a valuable commodity, and communities often settled near salt deposits.<\/p>\n<p>Its importance is reflected in names such as \u201cwhite gold\u201d and in many proverbs and traditions. In the past, salt was sometimes regarded as a treasure and could be valued even more highly than gold.<\/p>\n<p>In the Middle East, salt was an important symbol of hospitality and friendship. Because it was used to preserve and season food, sharing bread and salt came to represent lasting relationships.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient Greeks and Romans attributed protective properties to salt. The superstition that spilling salt brings bad luck, and that throwing a pinch over the left shoulder can avert it, is associated with these traditions.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, salt was also used in traditional remedies.
